Company Profile
AMX3d provides 3D printing supplies of the highest quality to customers demanding the best! We are passionate about 3D printing... but how did we get here? Every company has a story... this is the AMX3d story... technology, Robert, the wedding & 3D Printing...
For us, when we started and how it started began in the summer of 2015...Our founders were tech savvy entrepreneurs before Rep Rap (the birth of much of the technology we use today for 3D printing) was conceived. A father and son team they had formed a mobile technology company located in the Chicago suburbs mostly as a hobby. The son kept his job in technology, the father was a consultant in the financial industry by day. Andriod and IOS apps kept them busy during the evenings (you can find their apps on Google Play and Amazon appstore if you are curious- search Gen3 Software)... late evening calls when everyone else in the family was asleep were the norm. In general, the conversations were technical talks about APIs, UX, the next opportunity in mobile, the latest IPO. Just what you'd expect father and son tech geek talks to be.
Build a robot?
One evening, the topic was a little different. The son was getting married. His Aunt had just called to tell him that she and his Uncle would be unable to attend the wedding due to a very serious health condition with which the Uncle had been recently diagnosed. Upset, disappointed and concerned that his Aunt would be unable to attend, it was boldly proposed that they work together evenings to build a telepresence robot so his Aunt could "attend" the wedding.
Some father son teams go fishing or hunting. This team built technology. Build a robot? Challenge accepted! They attacked this project like they did any new project on a short deadline and fast became familiar technologies that were new to them... robotics, Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, solenoids, relays, voltage converters... and of course, enlisting the expert artistic touches where needed...
Powering Robert was a roomba, but in order to get it to work for their use they needed a simple part... an 18" in diameter ring to circle the Roomba to provide the stability. They prototyped one from wood but it was too heavy.. it needed to be lighter.
They had run into 3D printers at the local electronics store where they were now well known... this might be the technology needed to put the finishing touches on Robert. They bought a 3D printer and went about fabricating the part. Two weeks later Robert (pronounced "Robare"... the "t" is silent) began walking around the house.
In the next couple months, working together they became experts on printer calibration, hair spray vs. glue, leveling, Z offset, rafts vs. brims, slicers and hot ends. The experimented and watched print after print start then fail. More adjustments... more prints... new problems. Adjust and try it again... they began to open the door to the printer room slowly, in case the printer had become engulfed in a ball of filament. The giraffe became our test print...
In the end, the secret was in tuning the printer and preparing the bed then, and most importantly, printing with the right filament - a consistent filament, smooth, printed at the right temperature. A filament that would print the first layer as well as it prints the last. Filament that can print a smooth layer right on the bed then make a straight, smooth line on support. They had tried many different brands... the problem, they found was consistency. Cheap brands are often good at printing some things some times... but if you test with a 30 minute print time then start a 9 or 10 hour job do you have the confidence to walk out of the room? They found that expensive filaments are not necessarily consistently good nor good for printing all types of projects. They found some filaments that printed extremely well until it came to laying thin support, then the entire print became wrapped around the hot end. Most frustrating was that price was not the best determinant of filament (unless it was the bargain brand)... many brands, even expensive brands showed big differences between spools, even within a spool. At 6, 9 or even 12+ hours a print the cost of failure is just too high.
So they set out to develop a brand of 3D printer supplies that can be bought with confidence. Filament that a beginner doesn't have to understand but that a pro appreciates!
